FEDSAS congratulates successful matriculants, but urges government to step in to save education in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo

Together with their matric certificates, the more than 455 000 matriculants who completed the 2015 final exam successfully also receive an opportunity for a better future. “Successful schooling is the key to more opportunities and we share in the joy of these successful matriculants as we celebrate their wonderful performance,” says Mr Paul Colditz, CEO of the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS). FEDSAS also wishes to congratulate the teachers, parents and others role-players who’ve worked just as hard for this success.

Although the matric pass rate has decreased with 5% (70,7% as opposed 75,8% in 2014), some 52 000 more learners (455 825) passed the final exam as a result of the higher number of learners – nearly 800 000 – who wrote the final exam. “We shouldn’t read too much into the pass rate. The throughput rate has improved and that is a stronger indication of progress and success,” explains Colditz.

The annual matric results also serve as a barometer of the quality of education in the various provinces. Colditz has voiced his concern over the quality of education in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. “About 60% of the total number of matriculants who wrote the final exam were registered in these provinces. Unfortunately these provinces also produced the worst results by far. It is a clear indication that the Minister of Basic Education should step in to avoid disaster. Education in these provinces is characterised by one issue after another – no wonder learners become the victims.”

For the successful candidates the ball is now in their court. However, this does not mean that there does not rest some responsibility on the government and society as well. “There are about 450 000 new matriculants ready to enter the job market. Completing your school career successfully is no mean feat. Some of these young people did so despite extremely difficult circumstances. This speaks to their character and the value they can bring to any work force. Job creation is one of the aspects that deserves serious attention from the government.”

In the meantime, FEDSAS has already rolled up its sleeves to help the class of 2016 to make sure they have the best possible chance for quality education in order to complete their school careers successfully.
