24/11/2017 - Fedsas

One of South Africa’s foremost education law experts has received the World Education Congress’ most prestigious award. Dr Jaco Deacon, Deputy CEO of the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS) received the WEC’s award for leadership in education in India yesterday (Thursday, 23 November 2017).

Three other South African education role-players also received WEC awards. Mr Frans Kalp of the Ligbron Akademie received the award for Excellence in E-learning and Innovation, Ms Phuti Ragophla of the Pula Madibogo Primary School received the award for Rural Education and Ms Ronelle Klinck of the Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy received the Edutech Leadership Award.

The winners are selected by an international team of education experts. The conference brings together education role-players from all over the globe to discuss education challenges and find solutions. This year’s theme is evolving trends in education, with a focus on modern and traditional knowledge systems.

Deacon’s paper at the conference focuses on how courageous leadership in education can change the world. “The award is a big honour for me, but more importantly, it is an international acknowledgement of FEDSAS’ work. South Africa needs leaders, especially in education, because here leaders do not only have the duty to lead but also to show children what real leadership entails,” says Deacon.

“Jaco is one of those visionary people who can find solutions and then inspire others to implement these solutions. His expertise on South African education law is not only an asset to FEDSAS, but to all who wants to establish and maintain quality education in South Africa,” says Mr Paul Colditz, CEO of FEDSAS.

Deacon is the author of School governance: Common issues and how to deal with them, editor of the books Financial Management in Public Schools: A practical guide to legislative compliance, Case Law Handbook on Education and the Juta Education Law and Policy Handbook. Deacon is also the President of the South African Education Law Association (SAELA) and in this capacity he is using his visit to India to build the association’s network and to increase international participation at the South African conference.
